The Bespoke Process
“Sustainability is an inherent part of my practice - it’s simply how I live and work.”

Founder & MILLINER
Sustainability
Millinery is the original sustainable arm of the fashion industry – typically using offcuts or by-products to create new materials (eg felt production (using fibres discarded from other industries), feathers (ethically sourced feathers from high-welfare farms where birds are used for food), and trims reused from past seasons.
Our day-to-day practices include:
- recycling by pulling apart old, damaged or unsold pieces and reusing the materials in new designs);
- saving every scrap and offcut for future use;
- using compostable/degradable or recyclable materials where possible;
- using organic cottons and linens as much as possible (which require fewer harmful chemicals and less water to process);
- incorporating recycled materials like recycled polyester and upcycled fabrics into designs to minimise textile waste;
- exploring new, innovative, sustainable and bio-based materials.
Planting Trees
We are proud to partner with The Future Forest Company so that for every online order, a tree will be planted in the UK, to mitigate our brand’s unavoidable carbon emissions.
The Future Forest Company is on a mission to replenish nature by planting forests, restoring peatlands, and safeguarding natural habitats to invest in a greener tomorrow. By choosing to plant trees with The Future Forest Company, we are delighted to be making a real impact towards restoring nature, creating woodlands and safeguarding vital habitats.
Recyclable and Biodegradable Materials
Examples Include:
Cellulose Acetate- Our French handmade claw grips and barrettes are crafted by artisans in Oyonnax, France and are made from cellulose acetate – a sustainable, biodegradable material produced in a closed-loop system where every scrap is reused = no plastic, not ending up in landfill.
Straw- We use biodegradable plant fibres in our straw hats (eg raffia, wheat straw, paper-based straws, toquilla) sourced from small business and small supply chains.
Feathers and Leather - We only use feathers and leather from high-welfare farms and only when the feather is a by-product from ethical food production (chicken feathers, sheep and goat leather) or feathers that are naturally shed (wild birds, peacock). Animal welfare is of the utmost importance to us and we make absolutely certain that all suppliers meet our very high ethical and sustainability principles.
Social
All products are handmade in house or by approved, small or family businesses;
Preference is always given to UK based suppliers, even if it costs more;
Local businesses are supported wherever possible;
We offer above average pay for our all-female employees along with amenable working conditions, flexibility, and a valued voice in the general direction and operation of the brand;
We are the antithesis of the fast fashion industry! For example: it takes many hours to make one piece; items are made in small quantities ensuring no waste; pieces are designed and made for durability, repair and recycling (in other words, we create heirloom pieces to be passed down from parent to child and those pieces can be brought back from re-trimming, repair or re-design);
We teach clients how to properly look after, clean and store their pieces;
We partner with 'Saheli Women' – a female social enterprise whose mission is to financially empower women in rural Rajasthan through skills development and by providing sustainable livelihood opportunities in slow fashion. We take hand-woven and dyed fabrics created by these women and use them in our in-house made designs.
Our Packaging
Our packaging is entirely biodegradable and largely recyclable.
We are proud to use Fibrestrap biodegradable security swing tags.
Deadstock Fabric
We heavily make use of deadstock fabrics, vintage trims and fabric remnants.
